The University of Chicago, during the 1990’s, conducted research on men’s and women’s responses to minute concentrations of pheromones naturally produced in humans and frequently used in colognes or perfumes. They were the male steroid androstadienone, and the female steroid estratetraene, and each was supposed to make its wearers more sexually appealing to the opposite sex.

The University performed its research on ten men and ten women, by placing the steroids, diluted in propylene glycol, in extremely small amounts beneath their noses and on their necks. They also tested them with the steroids in their undiluted state. The test subjects were then required to answer long and tedious questionnaires, and the women’s moods grew more positive during their testing, while the men’s moods deteriorated.

Based on the findings of that particular study, it appears that while pheromone cologne might be quite effective in encouraging women to be more receptive to men, pheromone perfume may actually have the opposite effect on men’s responses to women.

More Research

The UC research on pheromone was substantiated in early 2007, when a study at UC Berkeley showed that heterosexual women exposed to androstadienone extracted from male sweat experienced increased cortisol levels. Cortisol is the hormone associated with stress and arousal. Berkeley’s findings, like that at UC, supported the claims of pheromone cologne manufacturers, but did nothing to suggest that pheromone perfume is useful in attracting men.

A look at one pheromone perfume advertised as containing androstenol, the pheromone produced by both men and women, even admits that there is not enough research to prove that it is a guy magnet, but that the number of repeat customers for that particular pheromone perfume indicates that it must be getting results.

Copulins

The real powerhouses among the female pheromones, and the one which studies have shown increases levels of the male arousal hormone testosterone 150%, are copulins, or fatty acid secretions. The odor of these secretions is so overwhelming, however, that a pheromone perfume containing them would be very unpleasant.

Synthetic unscented copulins have been produced, and can be mixed with the user’s favorite scent to produce a unique pheromone perfume, but some users have reported that using it even in small amount makes them very lightheaded. And they aren’t cheap; synthetic copulins can cost as much as $80 for a 10ml spray bottle.

Pheromone perfume which actually smells like perfume and works as well on men as pheromone cologne works on women, it seems, is still some time away.
